What is BIRFI?
BIRFI (Bulk Image Resizer for Instagram) is a free, browser-based tool for preparing your images for Instagram. Drop in a single photo or several at once and pick one of three modes:
- Crop — trims each image to an Instagram-ready aspect ratio for a consistent feed.
- Split — cuts a wide photo into several side-by-side slices for a seamless carousel.
- Info Card — turns each photo into a captioned card with its camera metadata.
Export everything as a ZIP — all without your images ever leaving your device.
Why BIRFI?
BIRFI grew out of my own work as a photographer. I usually export my photos from Lightroom in 2:3 format — and then had to re-export each one separately in the right aspect ratio for Instagram. I wanted a fast, no-fuss way to crop images to the right ratio straight away.
Slicing wide shots in Photoshop to get a seamless carousel was another recurring chore. And for my macro photos I wanted to share the metadata along with the image — I had even written my own Photoshop script that read the shooting data and laid it over the photo. It never felt truly convenient.
So I built BIRFI: one tool that handles all of these steps in a single place.
Frequently asked questions
Are my images uploaded anywhere?
No. BIRFI processes every image directly in your browser. Nothing is ever sent to a server.
What does BIRFI cost?
Nothing. BIRFI is free, contains no ads, and uses no tracking. If you would like to support the project, there is a Buy Me a Coffee link in the header.
What is Crop Mode?
Crop Mode fits each photo to an Instagram-ready aspect ratio without distorting it. In the editor you drag the crop area (or nudge it with the arrow keys) until the subject sits right, then export the whole series as a ZIP.
Pick a preset or enter your own ratio:
- 1:1 — the classic square feed post.
- 4:5 — the tallest portrait the feed allows, for maximum screen space.
- 9:16 — full-screen Stories and Reels.
What is Split Mode?
Split Mode slices one wide panorama into several equal-sized, side-by-side tiles. Set the number of pieces and move the crop if needed; BIRFI cuts exactly at the edges so there is no overlap. Upload the pieces in the same order as an Instagram carousel and your followers swipe left to right through one continuous image.
Use it for:
- Panoramas that are too wide for a single post.
- Before-and-after rows placed side by side.
- A single large subject spread across several slides.
What is Info Card Mode?
Info Card Mode turns each photo into a card that overlays its shooting details — aperture, shutter speed, ISO, focal length, camera and lens — read automatically from the image's EXIF metadata. Choose a card layout, show or hide individual fields, and add copyright, a website, or your Instagram handle if you like. No cropping is applied.
Ideal for:
- Showing your feed how a shot was made.
- Behind-the-scenes and gear posts where the settings are part of the story.
What is the Upscale Guard?
When enabled, BIRFI refuses to enlarge images beyond their original pixel dimensions, so a small source photo will not be blown up and look blurry.
Which image formats are supported?
BIRFI reads JPEG, PNG, and WebP files. Exports are JPEG or PNG at the quality you choose.
How does the ZIP export work?
Click 'Export all (ZIP)' and BIRFI builds a single ZIP file containing all processed images, each named after its original.
Which browsers does BIRFI work in?
Any current version of Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari. No installation, no extension, no account.
